“The Galápagos Islands may just inspire you to think differently about the world.”
On the eve of our journey to a destination on earth that will surely seem like we’re on an entirely different planet, a compilation of our thoughts and expectations…
Connor (our future marine biologist):
“The Galápagos are an amazing place for animals to live. From little penguins to the great hammerhead sharks that roam the sea. On our trip to the Galápagos one of the animals I’d like to see is the marine iguana. I’d like to see a marine iguana because they are the only iguana that can swim. As a matter of fact they can go 36 feet under water! The next animal I want to see is the flamingo. I think flamingoes are cool animals because they are one of the only pink animals. But the animal I really want to see is the hammerhead shark. I really want to see the hammerhead shark because they are an odd animal. The Galápagos is filled with animals big and small. I look forward to seeing them all.”
Keegan (who will be planning our next trip):
“In the Galápagos Islands we are going to be on a yacht. A yacht is a boat that is bigger than 40 feet long where we are going to live for 5 days. The yacht is going to take us to 7 different islands:
Monday: North Seymour Island — Tuesday: Bartolomé & Santiago Islands — Wednesday: Bachas Beach & Cerro Dragon, Santa Cruz Island — Thursday: South Plazas & Santa Fe Islands — Friday: San Cristóbal Island
There are many things to do and see in the Galápagos.”
Erin (who I believe is secretly just happy to have a warm shower):
“Galapagos…
Another adventure begins tomorrow. We’ve asked the boys to contribute to this blog post and tell us what they want to see on this next trip. We too have our own thoughts and expectations about what we’re about to see and do…
For me, I’m excited to show our boys an entirely new ecosystem. To see the awe and amazement in their eyes when they get to see the animals they want to see. I too can’t wait to see things we’ve only read about! To experience life on a yacht for 5 days and see the boys experience something so cool at such a young age! The last time on the ocean was a much larger boat but a new experience for me nonetheless. I’ve made sure to pack the motion sickness medicine as this ship will clearly experience the waves of the ocean a bit differently!
And yes, Tim is correct- a hot shower on a daily basis is defiantly one of the things I’m looking forward to! But also fresh food every day (we hear from numerous sources that the food on these cruises is the best food they had in Ecuador and we’ve had some phenomenal food already), a chance to unwind, and take in everything around us without feeling like we have to rush to the next project or class.
In planning and discussing this trip with Tim we kept coming back to one thought…this is the Galapagos…a place unlike anything we’ve ever seen. We have to do this right…make the most of this time here and provide an opportunity for our boys to see something beyond their dreams!
As with any adventure (and maybe Perrin Adventures especially) there are always twists and turns, unexpected things always pop up…but I’ve got the best crew with me, and in the end I know it won’t be something we’ll forget anytime soon.”
And me:
“Months of planning are now finalized and coming to fruition. Our bags our packed to visit one of the most amazing places of natural splendor that humans have ever known. What must have the first explorers thought when they encountered these new and unusual animals and landscapes never seen before? What did Darwin experience to inspire a new theory about how species originate and adapt to best suit its environment, entirely changing our understanding of life and its delicate balance of fragility and resilience? What will we witness that will ultimately shape our beliefs about our place in this complex world?”
Hola Galápagos. We can’t wait to meet you!
